The Myth of Variety: Why Boredom is the Key to Your Health Goals

Too often, I hear people say they stopped their weight loss or health plan because of boredom. “I get tired of eating the same things over and over.” Sound familiar?

What if I told you that variety is a myth? People love the idea of variety more than they actually eat a wide variety of foods.

After conducting thousands of nutrition assessments over my 20+ years as a dietitian, I can confidently say that we are creatures of habit. Even when eating in an unhealthy way, people tend to consume the same foods repeatedly. They go to the same drive-thrus, order from the same coffee shops, and rotate between the same pizza and taco spots. At home, they cook and eat familiar meals over and over.

I’m convinced that people love the idea of unlimited food choices—eating whatever they want, whenever they want—but in reality, their choices are surprisingly predictable. Simply put, variety is a concept that sounds appealing, but it doesn’t actually reflect the way most people eat.

Why Does Eating for Health Feel Boring?

When you start improving your nutrition, it may feel dull—not because the food itself is boring, but because your mind begins to focus on what it thinks it’s missing. You start daydreaming about all the foods you could be eating, all the places you could go, all the flavors you could experience.

Health is all about perspective. It requires a shift in how you think about your food choices and your overall well-being. The truth is, getting healthy isn’t glamorous. It’s about waking up every day and consistently making the choices that support your goals. It’s about repetition, commitment, and patience.

Habit, Routine, and Ritual Replace Variety

If you want to succeed in your health journey, you need to embrace habit, routine, and ritual. The more structured and simple your approach, the higher the likelihood you’ll stick with it.

Think about it—if you rotate between just two breakfast options, that’s one less decision to make in the morning. Decision fatigue is real, and simplifying your food choices frees up mental energy for other aspects of your life.

Where the Real Fun Begins

When you improve your health, the true fun and real variety come from what your body allows you to do. It’s the freedom to enjoy vacations without discomfort, to take long walks without pain, and to feel comfortable and confident in your own skin. Variety and joy stop being about food and start being about living.
